In the spirit of a science article, here are some supplementary tips:

Tip S1: Try and avoid colours that are common for people with colour blindness. IN particular, red and green line charts are almost impossible to discriminate. You can learn more here https://www.brightcarbon.com/blog/optimising-presentations-for-people-with-colour-blindness/

Tip S2: I advocated above for less text on slides. However, your audience will include people with English as a second language and potentially a hearing impairment. Therefore, the slide should have sufficient text for the audience to understand in the absence of the presenter. Equally, the presenter should be understood in the absence of the slide.

Finally, I was also made aware of a recent article in Nature on how to tell a compelling story in scientific presentations: https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-021-03603-2
Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13154338655875947401noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7493723606219936779.post-8370112541672739522022-01-06T20:26:20.616-06:002022-01-06T20:26:20.616-06:00It is with an immense sadness that I learn about H...It is with an immense sadness that I learn about Hal's passing away today. Hal pioneered experimental haematology particularly by demonstrating that umbilical cord blood was an important source of HSC for transplantation and his extensive work on the role of chemokines in regulating haematopoiesis (CXCL12 and many others), and HSC mobilisation. On a personal point, Hal was always supportive, encouraging, kind and generous with his advice.
Good by Hal, you will be missed.

Jean-Pierre LevesqueAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18427055849832023155noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7493723606219936779.post-49002990739783084102022-01-06T18:16:41.555-06:002022-01-06T18:16:41.555-06:00In the mid seventies when I was laboring in Portla...In the mid seventies when I was laboring in Portland, Oregon as a second- and third-year hematology fellow I had valued mentors involved in hematology research but none of them focused on hematopoiesis or had experience with the in vitro methods I was learning to use. I had been asked and supported to build a lab focused on hematopoiesis, but I needed the help of advisors from other institutions and happily found it by communicating with ISEH members in other institutions. None were as important as Hal was to my development as a clinician scientist. We first met after one of his ISEH presentations on feedback regulation of granulopoiesis. I was unknown to him (and anyone else) but got up the courage to stop him to ask a question while he was rushing up the stairs to his room between sessions. Rather than give me a quick “who-the-hell-are-you?” answer, he said “lets sit down to discuss this.” It was a lengthy conversation. Since then, for nearly fifty years, he served as a collaborator, an advisor, and most importantly a trusted friend. It’s honestly frightening to think of how my own professional life might have evolved without having known Hal. Hundreds of other investigators in centers around the world will share the same sentiment not on account of his scientific contributions and extraordinary productivity, but because of his listening skills, egalitarianism, direct style, collaborative inclinations, and commitment to training the next generation of investigators.
Grover C. I do believe it is in fact a reflection of many troublesome aspects of our general Western society where the pace of change is making it difficult for the human psyche to have time to integrate incoming information and feel able to respond to so many decisions so quickly. And this is just further compounded by the enormous increase in the numbers and diverse locations of the people that now constitute any single person's entire "community" -often not with the personal connections that were historically inherent in one's life even in the recent past.

So what can we do about it? My recommendations are as follows: Learn to develop and apply principles of logic and reproducibility, recognize that NOTHING is forever, identify colleagues that share those principles ideally with many backgrounds, embrace criticism and flexibility (as just another way to learn), and build knowledge and confidence in YOURSELF. Grants, publications, and what you actually decide to spend time on in your own scientific pursuits all need now to be marketed to different audiences. You can't have one without any of the others, but we are no longer in a one solution fits all world.

Yes - it is always disappointing to be "rejected". But most scientists of repute will tell you that their most important discoveries or contributions were not published in top journals or well received at grants panels. And this goes back even several decades ago. It is just now more apparent because of a current obsession with potential for translation in a general society that is driven by market forces. This does not mean it is all bad. Perhaps it means that we need more creative ways to bring the importance and rewards of understanding scientific principles more foremost in every sector of our society - just as music has done.

Connie Eaves -Editor-in-Chief, Experimental Hematology (the growing landmark home of significant scientific advances in all aspects of hematology/hematopoiesis and the tissues where blood cells are born, live, die and have an influence).

Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07253510946056909529noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7493723606219936779.post-36497550556247090022020-04-03T02:44:08.800-05:002020-04-03T02:44:08.800-05:00Thanks for the update. Of course, someone might have simply missed something as they reviewed a ton of grants (and we all usually give them the benefit of the doubt). However, I think about implicit bias using that example. Do the ground-state facts and perception match? When they do not match, then one reason could be implicit bias. The question is whether we can be self-aware enough to catch when that happens. My personal experience is that having good friends, preferentially some at same/similar position and some that are out of the field is most helpful.
