Don't Miss the New Investigator Committee Sessions in Kumamoto!
The 2024 NIC at the ISEH 53rd Annual Scientific Meeting
Don't Miss the New Investigator Committee Sessions in Kumamoto!
Are you a trainee who will attend the ISEH 2025 Annual Scientific Meeting in Kumamoto? If so, you need to check out the educational and career sessions organized by the New Investigator Committee (NIC). It is a great opportunity to meet trainees from around the world and to network with PIs and core members of the ISEH. Forming new bridges with them will benefit your scientific career and open doors to new collaborations. Here is a breakdown of our sessions that can be added to your meeting registration.
Are you an early career researcher (student or postdoc) looking to connect with peers and mentors, receive feedback on your poster, and get an opportunity to present your work at the ISEH 2025 annual meeting? Look no further than the New Investigator Pre-Meeting Workshop (PMW)!
The PMW will be held on the afternoon of September 24th in Kumamoto-Jo Hall. This workshop offers students and postdocs a valuable opportunity to connect with peers and faculty, receive feedback on work to be presented at the main meeting, and engage in discussions on key topics related to a career in science. All abstracts submitted to the PMW will be considered for one of the six short talk slots - the top two short talk presentations will receive a cash prize, and one will earn a speaking slot at the main ISEH annual meeting. This year’s theme, “Cultivating Resilience in Science,” will be explored through an interactive keynote presentation by Drs. Edwin Hawkins and Zuzana Tothova, encouraging reflection and discussion. The workshop concludes with a two-part poster session, allowing ample time for interaction with fellow poster presenters and feedback from participating faculty, and the top 3 highest scoring posters will be awarded with a cash prize.
The PMW will be moderated by Maria Jassinskaja and Jasmin Rettkowski, who along with fellow NIC member Kohei Shiroshita will be available onsite to answer any questions you may have about the PMW or how to get involved with ISEH. View the full program here.
Don’t miss this opportunity to network with world-leading experts in the field of experimental hematology, ask your burning scientific questions, and get career advice, all while enjoying a delicious breakfast!
Held in the morning of September 26th, this event offers early career researchers a chance to connect with leading hematology experts over breakfast. Participants will be divided into small groups (3–4 people) and rotate through three 15-minute sessions, each at a different expert’s table, allowing for focused, engaging discussions in an informal setting. This year’s Meet the Experts Breakfast Mixer will feature 10 carefully selected experts from all around the world, covering a vast number of topics within the fields of hematology and immunology; ISEH award winners Conny Bonifer (UK), Ulrich Steidl (USA), Adam Wilkinson (UK) and Vanessa Scanlon (USA), current ISEH president Shannon McKinney-Freeman (USA) and 2026 president-elect Jennifer Trowbridge (USA), as well as Marta Derecka (USA), Joan Yuan (Sweden), Gerald de Haan (The Netherlands), and Atsushi Iwama (Japan).
In case you are not 100% convinced that you should attend, we asked Alessandro Donada, an ISEH member and trainee, to describe his experience: "I participated to the Meet the Expert twice, and both times were brilliant! I already knew a little bit the Experts, essentially because I knew their line of research beforehand, so it was more about asking them what is not coming out of their papers. You can use this opportunity to get career advice of course, but I found out that it's a rather unique opportunity to ask big questions to the leaders of your field, and getting their perspectives could be quite inspiring!”
The Meet the Experts Breakfast Mixer will be moderated by NIC members Jasmin Rettkowski, Kohei Shiroshita, Maria Jassinskaja, and Ran Jing.
Are you curious about careers that are outside of academia or in a unique scientific environment? If so, the NIC Career Session is surely a must-add to your list. We will host three panelists on the 25th of September, from 13:15-14:05, to discuss their work experience and scientific journey. Each panelist will take a few minutes to present themselves, and this will be followed by a 30-40 minute period of questions from the audience. You can ask them anything you want! We will be joined by Akiko Kimura, a Senior Medical Director at Takeda. Takeda is the third largest pharmaceutical company in Asia and has been at the forefront in the development of many therapies linked to oncology, inflammation, rare diseases, neuroscience and vaccines, to name a few. We will also be joined by Koji Eto, professor and co-founder of Megakaryon. Megakaryon is a company focused on the use of induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells to produce platelets and blood products that will be safe for patients. We will also be joined by Jennifer Trowbridge, professor at the Jackson Laboratory. This independent research institute located in Maine has a rich history and was built on the premise of scientists working together and helping each other to accelerate the development of novel transformative biomedical advancements. This session will be moderated by Ran Jing and Kohei Shiroshita from the NIC.
We are privileged to work in a field that is continuously developing novel technologies, and it is important to bring them forward at the ISEH Annual Scientific Meeting. This year, based on the abstract submissions, the NIC selected the theme of “Latest advances in imaging technologies”. We will host three scientists that will present to us their latest contributions to this ever-growing field. We will be joined by Amy (Cih-Li) Hong, Shinya Fujita and Shinya Yari. Amy (Cih-Li) Hong is a PhD candidate at the University of Rochester Medical Center. Amy uses intravital microscopy to study the bone marrow microenvironment and how its remodeling shapes the hematopoietic stem/progenitor cell niche. Shinya Fujita is a postdoctoral researcher at the Japan Institute for Health Security who works on the neural and mechanosensing regulation of the homing of hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells. Shinya Yari is a postdoctoral researcher at the Harvard Medical School who used Image-Seq to isolate specific cells from defined bone marrow locations for further downstream analysis (e.g. transcriptomics). If you want to join us and learn more about these novel technologies, we will kick-start at 13:15 on the 27th of September. This session will be moderated by Kohei Shiroshita and Ran Jing from the NIC.
ISEH 2024 NIC Tech Session
New Investigator Award Lecture
This is one of our favourite sessions at the ISEH Annual Meeting because it highlights some of the most groundbreaking research submitted to the meeting. This year, the New Investigator Award Lecture will take place on the 27th of September (8:45-10:35) and will be moderated by Maria Jassinskaja from the NIC. This session will also feature the 2025 NIC Invited Speaker: Shalin Naik, professor at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research in Australia. Shalin and his lab have pioneered the study of clonal biology by integrating many approaches together, including AI/ML, to understand and identify the mechanisms underlying the fate and decision of blood cells in physiological and pathophysiological conditions. His presentation will be followed by 6 short talks from the selected abstracts for this session: Arianna Smith (University of Florida, USA), Chang Xu (Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences & Peking Union Medical College, China), Cih-Li (Amy) Hong (University of Rochester Medical Center, USA), Ashley Kamimae-Lanning (University of Oxford, UK), Tsuyoshi Fukushima (University of Tokyo, Japan) and Marija Zarocsinceva (University of Cambridge, UK). There are prizes to be won by the featured speakers, so come and show your support to our ISEH trainees!
Have a chat with us!
There will be a few NIC members on site (members Jasmin Rettkowski, Kohei Shiroshita, Maria Jassinskaja, and Ran Jing). We usually have a ribbon on our badge to make it easier for you to spot us in a busy crowd. If you have questions or suggestions on how we can improve our educational and career-focused activities for ISEH trainees, or interested in learning more about the NIC, come have a chat with us. We would love to hear from you and get your feedback!
